Shovel takes place somewhere between reality and the cartoony world of my paintings. It’s as if William’s subconscious and unconscious landscapes have taken tangible form. It’s not a dream world, but it comes from the same place dreams bubble up from.

To that end, we will be creating set pieces that marry a tangible, real world with the world of my paintings. Below is a low-quality black and white photo of a porch we might film on. We will be creating cartoon facades of brightly colored bricks to mimick the houses in my paintings. These facades will only go part ways up the fronts of the real houses, in order to create that middle, limbo place. We will also be painting a film on the insides of the windows so that the light shining out into the darkness will be colorful.
